Player Cities v0.5 Q&A

For my first dev blog here, I thought I'd take a few minutes to outline some of the questions people have been asking about how Player Cities are intended to function in Divergence.
First off, try not to look at "a city" as if it were an object to be right-clicked and transferred into your ownership. A player city is nothing more than a collection of individual buildings placed by individual players in close proximity of one another. If those players with to share the expense of a mutually beneficial defensive network for their homes or buildings, they can decide among themselves someone who represents their interests, and that person can place a city hall.

The city hall serves numerous purposes. First and foremost it taxes all buildings within it's sphere of radius designated by it's owner and collects those fees. That revenue is pooled and added to it's own maintenance pool, which is the source of the services it can furnish.

The most common service a city hall can provide is to establish a militia or police force (depending on what the township wishes). A militia is typically a set of NPCs which are spawned and patrol within the city hall's sphere of influence. They're programmed to attack either individuals specified at the city hall, or can be extended to broader specifications such as "attack all non-OSI aligned" if the town wishes to be factionally affiliated.

This "militia" will patrol within it's boundaries, in between structures and attack anyone specified as "unwelcome". Once a member of it's ranks is killed, it is replaced by the city hall at the expense of it's maintenance pool.

The mayor (the owner of the city hall) can also place defensive structures as anyone else in the world can but any defensive structure (unless overridden such as a wealthy individual wishing to employ their own personal estate defenses at their own expense) placed within the sphere with maintenance from (once again) the city hall.

Q:"But what if our mayor quits the game or is being a douche?"
A: (Currently) there is only one way to replace an uncooperative mayor in Divergence. Armed rebellion.

A city hall is like any other structure in that it can be destroyed, either through controlled demolition or a simple self destruct sequence initiated by an AI or highly-skilled hacker. The mayor obviously can do anything in his power to stop this sequence from completing, including setting city defenses to target others at will, giving him time to access the panel and stop it's function. Once the city hall is destroyed, whatever was in the maintenance pool and internal bank (if that feature is enabled) is dropped to the ground for anyone to pick up. A new mayor can throw down a new city hall and the process repeats itself.

Q: "So what if someone sneaks through the main gate at my city, kills all the guards, destroys the defensive turrets, blows up the city hall and takes my money?"
A: Well then, it sucks to be you.

Remember that because a mayor can take measures to stop the destruction of his city hall, through personal action and city defenses that the only time when one individual should be able to totally take over a town is if that town is already virtually vacant and has no operational defenses of it's own. "Taking over" a township/town/city/metropolis requires a coordinated effort of several individuals willing to risk dying and losing their own inventory and equipment in the process. It also requires the commitment to, if necessary, maintain that effort in preventing the existing mayor from thwarting their attempts.

In other MMOs, the one's brave enough to attempt player cities, you always find their still remains scattered around. Ghost towns long since vacant, taking up prime real estate and always right where you wanted to mine a really good concentration of aluminum alloy. That won't happen in Divergence. "Don't try to take more than you're prepared to commit to defending" is the rule.

Q:"You said already that you don't impose a value set on players. Remember that stuff about player freedom? What if I want to name my town something ridiculous?"
A: You're more than welcome to name your city a disgusting array of personal attacks and/or racial slurs if you so wish. But as with everything in Divergence, be aware of the repercussions. A few might be:

  1. A town named "Cuntville" or "Buttsecksopolis" isn't going to make it into the story. Neither will "Alderaan City" or anything else obviously named after something from another game or franchise. Don't expect my or anyone else on the dev team's help if your desire to be unoriginal and cliche.
  2. For names that go beyond the beyond of offensiveness, such as racial slurs, you can expect no interference from anyone representing Stainglass Llama at that time. However keep in mind that we're developers by day, players by night, and if someone on my team wants to make it a personal mission to obliterate a city with a bigotous name, as long as they're operating at the capacity of a player and not a GM, they are well within their rights to do so.

I hope this has spelled out a few of the more pertinent questions people had about the player city system. Obviously there's a lot more I could get into but please understand that giving people info about a game you're in the process of making is a double-edged sword. On one side you want to give people as much info as possible, but on the other the moment you open your mouth you become liable for those features and at the time of this writing, there is just under a mere $5,000 in the development pool.

As always, thanks for your support and helping make Divergence: Online a reality!

I was actually wondering how the personal Islands would work with player cities and the like. Could I donate 1k, get the island and have a bunch of my friends come in and help build up a city? or would the land be locked to me?

Just to be clear, since wording can often be confused, If I commit 150 dollars, I would get The Beta Access, The Land Grab, The Speeder, The Rifle, The First Gen Solitus, A Vindicator, and a Verrator? I suggest pictures to show what you get at each level. Makes it less confusing.

Also, why the odd spread for delivery? I assume that beta is in July, while release would fall in September, assuming that you get funded and everything is finished on time.

I really hope you get funded since your game looks a lot more fun than the MMOs that have emerged in the last few years.

I'm not sure about the solitus, seeing as how they're a very limited reward. But I would guess you're correct in thinking that you get the other upgrades as well.

Correct. As stated in the description of each perk, you get everything up to that mark minus the first-generation solitus since they are meant to be extremely rare. However as you'll see, there's a package up there now that I just put up recently that replaces the Vindicator/Verrator character with a solitus while still granting the other bonuses. You should check that you.

If your character dies with the Solitus upgrade, is that gone for good or can your Solitus character survive with the perk?

Unknown said...

I see. You might want to edit the perk wording to reflect that. The phrasing: "All benefits listed above", makes it seem that you get everything that came before, the First Gen Solitus included... That is what I am looking for. ^_^ I would gladly commit 250 dollars for this, even though 220 dollars should be correct since in the description for the FGS it says something about purchasing it separately. Just let me know so I can Commit.

Have a pleasant day.

I was wondering the same, since they ARE a subspecies of humans in the game, wouldn't that make them eligible to use the cloning devices?

A fast tiny question! is this game going to be f2p or p2p?

Unknown said...

Unfortunately Indiegogo has a 12-perk limit on the number I can add, and I need the last one for the possibility I might be able to offer something else in the future. There's a LOT more than "having blue eyes" to a Solitus because I have to make that character a legendary entity in the universe with their own backstory for almost 300 years. However I really want this project to meet it's goal, so I'll offer here that if you make a contribution of $250, I'll add your email address in to the account system to reflect "Vindicator, Verrator, Solitus AND all lesser perks included".

Anonymous said...

Nope. Homo-Solitus is an upgrade that allows you to make and have any point in time one First-Generation Homo-Solitus character instead of a traditionally-born human persona (character). Being human, your character can clone anywhere and everywhere cloning is available, but if you die in an area where you can't clone and worst case scenario "perma-die", you can simply create another first-gen Solitus breed. HOWEVER if you choose to use a different name for this Solitus it will be considered to be a different character in the story and your first one will be considered to have permadied.

In lay-mans terms. Even if your character dies and is "Gone for good", your account is still enabled to create a new First-Gen Solitus, unlike Veli characters.

I hope this helps clarify.

Not decided at the moment. It depends 100% on how much financing we get to bring it to launch and thus how much has to be "borrowed" from other sources.

C.Brumm said...

Most definitely! You mentioned the First Gen Solitus will have other perks other than just blue eyes, will that be covered in your species and factions video? I'm curious to see, now that I know they can be made again unlike the Veli.

Contributed. You could have told me to bugger off and I still would have committed. But I thank you anyway.

Might I ask how the game is being developed? Is it raw C++, A prefab engine, or a from scratch engine? I assume that it is C++ since a higher level language would have a lot of issues dealing with the Level of Detail you have.

C.Brumm said...

Are you thinking of doing a monthly subscription or buy to play, if in fact you do choose p2p?

Tru7h said...

OK, but please, whatever you do, Don't make it monthly sub. If anything, it'd cut your possible buyers significantly. If there's no other way, micro payments (well balanced and fair, World of tanks has done this perfectly) are much better than Monthly sub

I would invest $200 if I could buy a vindi and solitus. I wouldn't even need the lesser perks I just love those two characters!

Unknown said...

@ Travis - Yes, it's in C++

@ Francesco - I really want to meet that goal but I don't want there to be too many Solitus, so I'm offering to you right personally that if you make a $200 contribution today, I'll flag your account to having both those unlocked for you. How's that? Offer's good for 24 hours.

Unknown said...

I'd love to do that today but thing is I have a bill due in a few days from now. I'd deff be able to do it by saturday next week, but not today at all.

If there's no way to do that that's fine bro I'll just buy one of the other perks but thanks a lot for replying, shows you care for us players!

I'm also confused at whether now the forums are supposed to be up and a new video or you're making a new video and the forums remain at the $10,000 mark?

Unknown said...

The website is the top priority right now. I'll have it up very soon. It'll be basic until I get more time to polish it, but it'll allow people to at least connect with one another and chat about the game.

Alright sick, well sorry I can't afford the $200 right now, I'll just settle for the $100 Solitus pack, hopefully that's helpful enough!
